2010 Monchhof Estate Riesling

1072180xThe Monchhof Estate Riesling is 100% Riesling grown from vineyards near Urzig, Germany. The Monchhof (translates to “Monks House”) Winery was started on a charter from the Pope in 1177, there is a stone Roman wine press on the site that dates back to Roman times. The current Estate buildings and wine cellar were completed in 1509 and the current owners (the Eymael family) purchased the facility in 1807. The Monchhof Winery received their first award in the United States at the Chicago’s Worlds Fair in 1893. 91 points Wine Spectator.

A typical pear nose gives way to a pear, lychee flavor, however;  what makes this wine unique is the yeasty finish that I have never had in a QbA before. The flavor reminds me of a “sur le” sparkling wine or of a late harvest wine with plenty of grapes subject to Noble Rot. Truly a value at this price point.

The 2010 Monchhof Estate Riesling is a bottle loaded with German wine history and tradition. Prices on the internet had it selling for between $15 and $20 which makes this an affordable entry into fine German wines.
